Escrevo-vos quase no fim do mês de Maio, mas não quis falhar com a nossa correspondência. Tenho andado ocupada com um projecto de desenho um pouco mais longo, que iniciei em Abril e que se vai prolongar até ao fim de Junho. E é por causa dele que neste mês e no próximo enviarei um postal em vez da carta habitual.

I write to you almost at the end of May, but I didn't want to miss our correspondence. I have been busy with a somewhat longer drawing project, which I started in April and will continue until the end of June. It is because of this that this month and the next I will send a postcard instead of the usual letter.

Cá dentro, nascem pequenas avencas, Adiantum capillus-veneris, no vaso de uma das suculentas. Despontam de um pequeno caule encimado por uma folha microscópica que de início parece uma cabeça de alfinete verde. O caule sobe no ar e a folha começa a abrir, a seguir as folhas sucedem-se duas a duas, finas delicadas como uma filigrana verde que cresce de dia para dia.

Inside, small ferns, Adiantum capillus-veneris, are sprouting in the pot of one of the succulents. They emerge from a small stem topped with a microscopic leaf that initially looks like a green pinhead. The stem rises into the air and the leaf begins to unfurl, followed by successive pairs of leaves, thin and delicate like green filigree that grows day by day.

Da varanda, o vale cobre-se de novas cores e reparo como de ano para ano a palete nunca é a mesma. Este ano as maias ou giesta-amarela, Cytisus striatus, espalharam-se pela encosta no seu amarelo vivo. Há seis anos que moramos aqui e lembro-me que no primeiro ano só havia um tufo de maias, mas desde então foram aumentando e agora conto seis tufos desta giesta. Gosto muito de as ver brilhar durante a tarde, um amarelo vivo, solar, que me enche sempre de alegria. Do lado direito perto da azinheira, a encosta forra-se de rosa das corriolas-rosadas, Convolvulus althaeoides, de lilás dos trevos-dos-prados, Trifolium pratense, e dum roxo quase anil das alcachofras-bravas, Cynara humilis. Aqui e ali, uns apontamentos em branco das cenouras-bravas, Daucus carota, e as transparências dos dente-de-leão, Taraxacum officinale, que nunca tinha visto tão volumosos. Tudo acompanhado do verde das cevada-das-lebres e do já quase beje das aveia-barbada. Acho que nunca tinha visto a encosta tão bonita como este ano.
Acho também, que o peso do sofrimento do mundo que todos os dias sinto é, não esquecido, mas de alguma forma transformado através da beleza destas cores e nos diálogos que tenho com estas vizinhas.

À tarde, quando ainda é dia mas o sol já está a pôr-se, é tempo de ver as andorinhas num vai-vem encantatório. Andorinhas-das-chaminés e andorinhas-dos-beirais voam de um lado para o outro numa dança que nos prende o olhar e deixa os gatos hipnotizados.

From the balcony, the valley is covered in new colours and I notice how the palette is never the same from year to year. This year, the Cytisus striatus, or Spanish broom, has spread across the hillside in its bright yellow. We've lived here for six years and I remember that in the first year there was only one clump of Spanish broom, but since then they've increased and now I count six clumps of this broom. I love seeing them shine in the afternoon, a bright, sunny yellow that always fills me with joy. To the right, near the holm oak, the hillside is carpeted with the pink of Convolvulus althaeoides, the lilac of Trifolium pratense, and an almost indigo purple of Cynara humilis. Here and there, there are white brushstrokes from the wild carrots, Daucus carota, and the transparency of the dandelions, Taraxacum officinale, which I've never seen so voluminous. All of this is accompanied by the green of hare barley and the almost beige of bearded oat. I don't think I've ever seen the hillside as beautiful as it is this year.

I also think that the weight of the world's suffering, which I feel every day, is not forgotten but somehow transformed through the beauty of these colours and the dialogues I have with these neighbours. Bless them!

In the afternoon, when it's still daylight but the sun is setting, it's time to watch the swallows in their enchanting to-and-fro. Barn swallows and house martins fly back and forth in a dance that captivates our gaze and leaves the cats mesmerised.

Partilho alguns esboços do projecto que estou a trabalhar mas o resto terá de ficar para mais tarde, porque até as minhas investigações e passeios pelo vale se relacionam com ele.

I am sharing some sketches from the project I am working on, but the rest will have to wait until later, as even my investigations and walks through the valley are related to it.

Herbarium - Capsella bursa-pastoris - uma planta que acho muito bonita e que este ano junto com os trevos-dos-prados e os cardos-dos-picos, propagaram-se por todas as redondezas onde caminho, desde o vale até distâncias maiores.
